My Heart Project in Ghana- Part 1

One morning while in Kumasi, we took a nice long walk around the neighborhood of our hotel. This particular day, we had to wake up early in order to complete our workout and make it back in time to be ready for the 9 am bus departure to our first activity. This unexpected portion of the schedule turned out to be the best part of our trip.

While walking, with no particular destination in mind, we talked and took in the sites of the second city that we were visiting in Ghana. We decided to walk fifteen minutes one way then turn around and walk fifteen minutes back to the hotel. At the point where we were preparing to turn around, we heard the sounds of drums and singing. My husband immediately identified pictures on a building that would suggest that the facility was a school. The gate was open and we decided to peak and see if adults were near by. We were greeted by a few women and we asked if it was a school. They confirmed and welcomed us in. Upon entering the gates, we saw the most beautiful sight…young children having the most fun during their morning music and movement activity. As a former kindergarten and first grade teacher, I was more than happy to jump right in to the routine.

We immediately connected with the children, teachers, and administrators of the school. So much so that we managed to squeeze in two more visits to the school before departing to the next city. As the founder of The Magic of Learning Foundation, I’m particularly interested in ways we can help and support educators and parents in enhancing the educational experiences for their students and children.

Without assuming that our help was wanted or needed, my husband spoke with the Head Master and asked if there was anything he felt he needed to enhance the services of his school. I asked the teachers if there was anything they needed to help them improve their classroom instruction. Both the Head Master and lead teacher provided us with a list of their needs.

We then asked if they had an immediate need that would could assist with. They stated that they would love to have a computer. My husband spoke with the manager of the hotel who connected him with the IT manager who also had a computer company. He brought two brand new laptops that my sister-in-love evacuated to ensure it was of quality and had the functions she desired for the school. Before our departure the next morning, we were able to present them with a brand new laptop computer. The IT manager even agreed to provide free training to two members of the staff to ensure they know how to fully integrate it in the use of instruction and administration.

We officially adopted this school and I’m so excited to have a permanent connection to the motherland. My African heart project is now located in Kumasi. Part 2 will share details of the second part of my heart project- the orphanage we adopted in Cape Coast.

Stay tuned to learn more about their needs and for ways you can assist our efforts at this school in Ghana. Feel free to learn more about The Magic of Learning Foundation. You can donate to these projects through any of the following ways:
