Brown Skin Girl

“Brown skin girl. Your skin just like pearls. The best thing in the world. Never trade you for anybody else.”

~Beyonce and WizKid

This time last summer, my husband and his best friend organized and led a trip of exploration, learning, and discovery to Ghana to commemorate the Year of the Return. This twelve-day trip included guided tours, school visits, community service projects, sightseeing adventures, educational activities, cultural development, and a naming ceremony. It was a trip that provided deep reflection, self-discovery, and historical knowledge of where our ancestors came from and what they went through over the past four hundred years.

In planning our trip, we decided it was best to leave the girls behind due to safety concerns. Usually, when visiting places without them, I make sure I bring back souvenirs that include children’s books, shirts, toys, and pictures to share with them our experiences.

This time though, I sought a special gift that would truly capture the magic of the life-changing journey I encountered during my first trip to the Mother Land. While there, my husband and I had family attire custom made by a beautiful Ghanaian seamstress. We went shopping at a local fabric store and purchased pieces that reflected our family. He and I purchased purple and green fabric which were our wedding colors. It was the perfect way to symbolize our union. I also purchased two sets of pink and green fabric which are the colors of the illustrious sisterhood of which I am a member. The first set was for the girls and me to have a mommy-and-me matching outfit. To me, this represents the strong relationship that I strive to cultivate between me and my daughters. The additional set was to allow the girls to nurture their sisterly bond with a matching style.

I just love our brown skin girls!! These dresses served as the perfect way to not only bring Ghana back home to them but to also affirm who they are as beautiful Black princesses. Especially in the midst of the social injustice crisis, we find ourselves in the middle of today. Beyonce had it right– brown skin girls…you’re the best thing in the world! I’m thankful for the opportunity to nurture your growth and development into strong brown Queens. Check out these 10 daily affirmations and practices for your brown skin girls.
