To know me is to know my story! To everything there is a beginning and mine from the womb started off just a little rocky to say the least.
My mother was in a car accident and admitted into the hospital. She was prescribed medicine for pain and to assist with the symptoms of her injury. Of course modern technology wasn’t what it is today so it wasn’t until later that they detected that she was in the initial stage of pregnancy.
The horror! Finding out that the medicine that she was prescribed could have life damaging results on her unborn child, my mother was faced with the decision of terminating her pregnancy or taking the chance of delivering a child who would depend on her care around the clock for an anticipated short life span of up to six years. The recommendation of the doctor was to abort and save herself the heartache and misery.
But God! With faith of a mustard seed, my mother decided to seek the opinion of another medical professional. It just so happens that this particular doctor was new to the area but came highly recommended for her experience in women’s care. Dr. Janice Lark Coleman told my mother that based on her knowledge, she felt that with close monitoring and care, a healthy baby would be delivered. My mother went to the doctor for weekly visits to check my heart rate and vitals the duration of her pregnancy.
Complications came towards the end causing my mother to deliver a month early (to the day) of my anticipated due date. When she called, Dr. Coleman didn’t hesitate to come to Palmetto Richland Hospital (known then as Richland Memorial Hospital). From that moment of 7:08am on Wednesday, March 23rd, 1983, Dr. Coleman and I shared the bond of having the same birthdate.
Momma I’ve made it…literally…to grown woman status. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful husband, two beautiful girls, giving back to my community, a lauded career, and most importantly, the love of Christ! I’m so incredibly thankful for the faith my Mom had and the expertise of Dr. Coleman.
If you know me, you know I live my life to the fullest and on purpose! I truly believe, and try my best to embody, leaving the world a better place from us being here. You only have one life to live…and I’m so grateful to have mine.
