It was a perfect day to pick the sweetest apples with one of the sweetest little girls I know. After completing their Fall season segment and learning about Apple farms, Alana’s class took a field trip to Sky Top Orchard. Here are the top five highlights of our trip:
- Playground-as you can see, I wasn’t quite tall enough to reach the face of the scarecrow. That’s those little wife problems. That still didn’t stop me from posing with Alana and her friend for a quick fun pic. The kiddos had fun playing on the various outdoor play equipment while they waited to transition to the next activity .
- Behind-the-scenes tour- after playing on the playground with the other kiddos from various schools who too were enjoying their field trip, Alana’s group participated in a behind-the-scenes tour. They went to the apple assembly line where the owner/manager discussed the process of grinding apples to make other products such as cider and Apple sauce. They also went to the auditorium and discussed the seasons of the year, the best time of year pick apples, what happens to the trees during the off-season, and the importance of having bees during the process of growing apples. You have to be extra careful not to get stung while in these two areas.
- Hay ride- on the way to pick the apples, the ride gives you a beautiful mountain view of the property. The trees and skyline was absolutely breathtaking as we enjoyed the relaxing pace of the wagon.
- Apple picking- we made it to our destination of a field full of apple trees. We perused through the field until we found the perfect spot to pick our fresh fruit. The branches were full and located at the right height for both of us to pull from. Afterwards, we checked out the animals and fed them a snack of corn bites. Alana even had a little fun pretending she was riding the tractor.
- Shopping for sweet treats- now that we’ve picked, of course we want to eat. The gift shop has a ton of sweet treats for you to select from: doughnuts, slushes, cider, jelly, jam, candy apples, and everything else you could possibly think of making apples with. The slush was delicious and we can’t wait to try the doughnuts and cider for dessert.
We thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing day in North Carolina. We look forward to enjoying the goodies and the fresh apples with the family for dinner. To extend the fun, this evening we are reading “Peppa Pig Goes Apple Picking” to further discuss our experience during our Fall adventure today. Be sure to check out this attraction during your next trip to the area.
Until next time,
Xoxo
