My first trip to the Motherland…I’m eager to visit Ghana, where it all began for African Americans. I can’t say that I’m not nervous…of how I will feel and respond to cruel and unjust treatment of salves, how we will be perceived or received on the native land, and how I will adjust to meeting members of my extended cultural family for the very first time.
I believe this will be a liberating experience to see a country of black and brown faces living their lives without the pressure of racism and cultural oppression. However, I’m emotionally nervous to experience and see with my own eyes the route the slaves took and the conditions they endured. I’m nervous and excited all at once but extremely thankful to have my husband as the guide and facilitator of my journey.
My husband and his childhood best friend organized this educational group exploration to Ghana. The itinerary is full with school visits, museum tours, service projects, landmarks and monuments that detail the historical journey of Africans to America and other countries. They say a visit to the continent is one that will change your life. I’m looking forward to the journey.
Wheels up…we are ready to go!
Until next time,
